OUR DESIGN LANGUAGE
Luxury begins before a garment is worn.
It begins with the decisions that shape it.
At Make Mine Black, we believe clothing should have presence without unnecessary complication.
Our approach is rooted in architecture: structure, proportion, line, space and movement.
We remove what doesn't serve the garment and allow what remains to do its work.
THE LANGUAGE OF FOUNDATION 5
Foundation 5 is the first expression of this philosophy.
Across the collection, certain details return, not as decoration, but as a visual and structural vocabulary.

THE GOVERNING PRINCIPLE
Not every garment carries every signature.
Each element appears where it serves the architecture of the garment.
The language remains consistent.
The expression changes.
THE FOUNDATION LINE
A single, uninterrupted line.
Structure without disturbing the silhouette.
Every Make Mine Black garment begins with considered construction.
The Foundation Line is a single, uninterrupted line of stitching that creates structure while preserving the sculptural silhouette of the garment.
In the Foundation 5 Maxi Dress, Midi Dress and Jumpsuit, it begins above the signature contrast trim, travels through the waist and finishes just above the hip.
Within this line sits a discreet 1cm welt pocket, allowing function to become part of the construction rather than something added afterwards.
On the Foundation 5 Top, the Foundation Line appears as a shorter expression of the same idea — a 2-inch line of stitching beneath the arm that gently contours the bust while allowing the garment to retain its generous, architectural shape.
It is a detail many people may never notice.
But once you know it's there, you begin to recognise it.
THE SIGNATURE CONTRAST TRIM
A boundary. A beginning.
Where one material meets another.
The contrast trim was one of the first design decisions in Foundation 5.
It creates a visual point of departure — framing the garment while connecting the collection through colour, texture and line.
But its placement is never arbitrary.
On the Foundation 5 Skirt, the 2cm trim sits along the lower edge of the waistband before travelling vertically down the centre back to the hem, with the invisible zip concealed within it.
On the Maxi and Midi Dresses, the 2cm trim traces the neckline and frames the empire seam at the front and back before continuing vertically down the centre back to the hem, again incorporating the invisible zip within its construction.
On the Jumpsuit, the contrast trim becomes more commanding.
At 3cm wide, it frames the right side of the garment from neckline to hem, front and back.
The width changes.
The placement changes.
The purpose remains.
It creates a boundary.
A beginning.
A moment where one material meets another and the architecture of the garment begins to reveal itself.
THE BALLOON SLEEVE
Volume is not decoration.
It is proportion.
The balloon sleeve appears across the Foundation 5 Maxi Dress, Midi Dress and Top, where it creates contrast against the more considered lines of the body.
Domette gives the sleeve structure and allows it to hold its sculptural form.
Elastic at the cuff gives the wearer control over the volume.
Wear it long.
Push it back.
Ruched to the upper arm or forearm.
The silhouette changes with the woman.
The sleeve is generous.
The woman remains in control.
THE CONSIDERED OPENING
A glimpse, then gone.
The garment reveals itself in movement.
A garment should not reveal everything when standing still.
Some of the most important details in Foundation 5 exist in movement.
The side openings in the dresses are stitched to follow the body's silhouette before releasing above the hip, allowing the fabric to open as the woman walks.
A glimpse of leg appears.
Then disappears.
THE HIDDEN WELT POCKET
Function, made part of the line.
Nothing added afterwards.
The welt pocket sits discreetly within the Foundation Line.
At just 1cm, its opening is deliberately restrained — present without interrupting the silhouette.
Rather than placing function onto the garment as a separate detail, the pocket is incorporated into the construction itself.
It is there because it serves the woman.
It remains quiet because it serves the garment.
Function becomes part of the architecture.
STRUCTURE & MOVEMENT
Designed to hold. Designed to move.
Structure does not mean stillness.
Foundation 5 is currently produced to order, allowing us to work deliberately as the collection establishes itself.
As Make Mine Black grows, the way we produce may evolve. What will not change is our attention to construction, finish, proportion and fit.
Whether individually made or produced in considered quantities, each garment begins with the same intention:
The clothes should meet the woman.
Not ask the woman to meet the clothes.
MADE FOR YOU
Made with her in mind.
From the beginning.
Make Mine Black is made to order in London.
We do not produce Foundation 5 in bulk.
Each garment is individually cut, constructed and finished for the woman who orders it.
This allows us to work deliberately rather than quickly — concentrating on construction, finish and fit rather than volume.
Each piece begins its life because a woman has chosen it.
Not because we produced hundreds and hoped someone would.
Made to order is not simply how we manufacture.
It is part of how we believe fashion should be made.
NATURAL FIBRES
Chosen for what they do.
Material is part of the architecture.
We choose materials for what they contribute to the garment.
Linen for its structure, breathability and natural character.
Silk taffeta for its body, movement and ability to hold a sculptural form.
Cotton for its strength, comfort and versatility.
African wax print for its colour, pattern and connection to a textile tradition that has travelled across generations and the African diaspora.
The material is never separate from the design.
It is part of the architecture.
LIMITED QUANTITIES
Fewer, by intention.
Not everything should be everywhere.
Make Mine Black is not designed around mass production.
Our collections are produced in considered quantities, allowing us to grow deliberately while maintaining the standards of construction and finish we set for ourselves.
The quantity may evolve as the brand grows, but the principle remains: we have no ambition to make everything for everyone.
The woman who chooses Make Mine Black is choosing something considered.
Something made deliberately.
Something that will not be everywhere.
THE INSIDE MATTERS
Beautiful, even when unseen.
Craft does not stop at the surface.
We believe a garment should be beautiful even where nobody else can see it.
Seams are considered.
Edges are finished.
Pockets are incorporated into the architecture.
Bias binding is used where it serves the construction.
Interfacing and structure are chosen deliberately.
Because craftsmanship is not decoration.
It is discipline.
The inside should be as beautiful as the outside.
THE MAKE MINE BLACK PRINCIPLE
Does this serve the garment?
The question behind every decision.
Does this serve the garment?
If it does, it stays.
If it doesn't, it goes.
That is the discipline behind Make Mine Black.
The silhouettes may change.
The fabrics may change.
The colours may change.
The woman may wear them differently.
But the principle remains.
Nothing unnecessary.
Nothing accidental.
Allow the architecture to do the work.
MAKE MINE BLACK
For Women Who Define Themselves.
